An American and an Australian have been kidnapped in the Afghan capital of Kabul, a government official said Monday.
Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said the two were driving near the American University of Afghanistan on Sunday night when they were stopped by up to five gunmen wearing Afghan military uniforms, the Associated Press reported.
CNN reported that the two men were lecturers at the university. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
The U.S. Embassy in Kabul confirmed that an American was abducted but did not release any further details.
“U.S. Embassy security officials are working closely with Afghan law enforcement and security colleagues and AUAF (American University of Afghanistan) to assist in the investigation into the kidnapping,” it said in a statement.
The U.S, State Department also said that it was aware of reports of the kidnapping of an American but declined to comment further.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed “the apparent kidnapping of an Australian in Kabul.”
“We continue to advise Australians not to travel to Afghanistan because of the extremely dangerous security situation, including the serious threat of kidnapping,” it said.
Three other foreigners who were abducted in Kabul during the past year were released. The location of Kerry Jane Wilson, an Australian woman was kidnapped in the eastern city of Jalalabad in April is unknown.
